How It Works
X-chromosome genetics
The calico pattern is linked to the X chromosome. The orange and black color genes sit on the X chromosome. Female cats (XX) can carry both colors, producing the tri-color pattern. Male cats (XY) can only carry one, which is why calico males are extremely rare (about 1 in 3,000).
X-inactivation
In female cats, one X chromosome is randomly inactivated in each cell during early development. This creates the patchy pattern: some skin patches express the orange gene, others express the black gene. The white comes from a separate gene.
Not a breed marker
Because the calico pattern is controlled by a single genetic mechanism, it can appear in any breed or mixed breed. A calico Maine Coon and a calico domestic shorthair have the same color genetics but completely different breed backgrounds.
